Caroline was the sixth child of William and Sarah Manwaring and was born at Cranbrook on 18th March 1838.

She grew up and went to school in the town of Cranbrook and on 9th March 1857, just nine days after her 19th birthday she travelled with her family to Southampton and boarded the "Anna Maria" to make the long trip to Australia.

It is not known if Caroline travelled to Bungendore with her parents when they arrived in Australia or if she decided to stay in Sydney possibly living with her brother Thomas and his family.

On the 10th December 1858, a bit over 12 months after arriving in Australia, Caroline paid a deposit of eighteen pounds to the Immigration Deposit Fund to sponsor her older sister Julie Elizabeth, her husband James and their children to immigrate to Australia to join the rest of the family.

On 30th March 1872 at the age of 34 years, Caroline married Francis Arthur Artlett at St Pauls Church, Parramatta. The minister conducting the ceremony was the Reverend Canon Stephen and the witnesses were Caroline's niece Emily Manwaring and John Speirs. Emily was the eldest daughter of Caroline's brother Thomas. John and Emily were married just over 12 months later on 1st May 1873.

Francis Arthur Artlett was born in London on 21st November 1850 the third son of Job Artlett and Harriett Soper. He came to Australia with his mother and father in 1857 when he was six years old. His father was a brickmaker from Dover in Kent and was sponsored by William Artlett, a cabinet maker from Sydney, possibly his brother. On their arrival in Australia the family was put into quarantine for a week because of an outbreak of measles on the ship.

At the time of his marriage Francis was living in Parramatta and working as an Upholsterer.

Francis and Caroline had four children, Edith born 1873, Herbert born 1876, Mabel born 1880 and Arthur born in 1883. All their children were born at Parramatta.

Caroline died in 1906 and Francis three years later in 1909.
